Default PvE air spiker?

Hello. I am dissatisfied with nuker and was looking the change too spiker. So I looked up spiking and some builds but they all said that spiking was done in PvP and in groups. Is there such a thing as a solo spiker (which henchies of course) and if so how can I make one? all I have are prophosies and factions. Thanks

It is possible to solo-spike.

It's just that spellcasters fail at it - spells are slow, don't hurt much and are predictable. Also, without Nightfall, you're lacking Augury of Death to get a deep wound on your target - an almost essential component of a solo-spike.

Considering you're talking about Air Magic, you might be thinking casting Lightning Hammer and Orb on a target it a spike. Basically... it isn't. It's bad pressure.

For what it's worth, Water is the 'best' line for spiking. [skill]shatterstone[/skill] + [skill]vapor blade[/skill] is just about the best you can do.
And that's still pretty weak.

As Alex said, almost all you can do to spike with a caster is [skill]Shatterstone[/skill][skill]Vapor Blade[/skill][skill]Augury of Death[/skill].
What people mean when they say PvP teams spike is that midline casters (Elementalists, Mesmers etc) spike assist by casting a high damage skill in support of the frontline focused on a single target.

'Spiking' in PvE involves the PvE shouts "You Move Like a Dwarf!" and "Finish Him!". Any DD with those two shouts hitting in succession makes for a pretty decent spike.

I've never been in any PvE group that spiked out mobs though. You're looking at a DPS character with his own little minispike for low mobs.

Is there really a need to spike in PvE?

If you're in pve and looking for amusement however, this is what I ran in FoW tonight:

[skill]Freezing Gust[/skill][skill]Ride the Lightning[/skill][skill]Lightning Touch[/skill] if not dead, /run. [skill]Energy Blast[/skill]

Monks might hate you though. Milage may vary.

If I were your monk I'd not heal you and /point and /laugh when you die

That won't do enough to anything in Hard mode.

1. I did say for amusement.
2. I didn't say hard mode. NM FoW is easy as pie. Even with a crazy ass Ride the lightning into a mob build.
3. You will never be my monk, so I don't really care what you'd do. I normally run a monk, I'm well aware of the omg nature of it. So that takes me back to...
#1.

If you can't ever run a crazy or shit build just for lols on occasion, because you can, then maybe you should go play WoW.

didn't mean it to be harsh, but my point still stands. Screwing other players over for shits and giggles by using something that is not very workable isn't my idea of helping improve the playerbase and community interaction.

I wouldn't play WoW because I don't plan on farming hours for tiers of armor and +1 to stats.

I didn't say anything about screwing anyone over. Obviously if you ran a build like that, you'd have a responsibility to make sure you could do it and come out the other end alive if you expect to have any respect as a player. Taking down to someone else's idea just because it isn't normal or mainstream or dares to use unorthadox skills and tactics doesn't make them bad or noob, just unusual or different than the norm. Or even better, creative.

That, I would say does a lot worse to the player base and community interaction than a little Ride the Lightning, touchie touchie, running away will do. It is a game, people shouldn't be scared of what other people are going to post all the time, especially when it comes to sharing ideas.

Because walking over to fry someone wouldn't have tickled me as much as teleporting over and zapping them.

My point was, is you don't have play anything. Try and have some fun.

@hurdlebeast

I thought about mentioning that you could use Ride the Lightning and a shadowstep to keep from getting mauled too badly, but since I only named 3 skills, leaving 5 open spots for whatever, I didn't want be rude and state the obvious to what must be extremely experienced players. I mean, of course they thought of that, right?

Though I guess some people didn't catch the obvious...

You don't need to, but having a strong spike in a build in PvE can be pretty useful actually; the threat of a mob goes way down once even a single enemy is dead, especially if you can choose that foe. But no one countdown spikes in PvE, it's all loosely focused damage on a called target.

An Elementalist DD paired with "You Move Like a Dwarf!" and "Finish Him!" in quick succession makes for a pretty significant spike, that with a bit of assisted damage can knock out a foe of your choice pretty often. The ability of a Mind Blast Ele to pay for that regularly is one of the big reasons I won't bother with Searing Flames anymore.

Hehe, that's fine, my snark wasn't (intentionally anyway) being thrown in your direction.
